Guild History

The Wichita Weavers, Spinners and Dyers Guild was established in 1947 by ten handweavers, who were members of the Wichita Art Association, now the Wichita Center for the Arts. Some of the weavers had been to Penland, an art school in North Carolina, to study weaving while others belonged to an older, existing weavers' guild known as the Minisa Guild, which met at Minisa Park, near downtown Wichita. Initially, a special room was set up at the Wichita Art Association with looms and a weaving teacher, Emily Skinner. Looms were collected by donations and purchased by the Guild.

Throughout the years, the Guild has grown to include members interested in most all of the techniques of fiber art which include weaving, spinning, tapestry, dyeing, felting, paper-making, knitting, basketry, rug hooking, art quilting, fiber sculpture and surface embellishments on textiles.
